A Few Facts And Figures About Scotland

Scotland has the second highest level of obesity in the developed world, official statistics show.

Only America has a higher percentage of overweight adults, according to a recent Scottish Executive report.

The report shows that approximately one boy in six and one girl in seven in Scotland is obese. Among adults that number rises to one man in four and one woman in five.

In Scotland, the alcohol-related death rates for males and females
were around double the rates for the UK as a whole in 2002-
2004, according to new analysis published by the Office for
National Statistics (Spring 2007).
.
Glasgow City had the highest alcohol-related death rate among both men and women in 1998-2004. Fifteen of the 20 UK local areas with the highest male alcohol-related deathrates were in Scotland, with three in England and two in Northern Ireland. For women, 14 of the top 20 local areas were in Scotland, with four in England and two in Northern Ireland.

As in previous years, smoking prevalence in 2002 was significantly higher in Scotland, at 28%, than in the rest of Great Britain (National Statistics 2004. Living in Britain: Results from the 2002 General Household Survey.)

Scotland, as a whole, has higher mortality than other western European countries, with the exception of Portugal (The Medical Research Council 2007)

For every six Scottish residents of working age, official data suggests that there is one Scot of working age resident elsewhere in the UK. (The Times May 1 2007)

The income of the average Scottish resident is 4 per cent below the UK average. (Times 1 May 2007)

Although down by a sixth over the last decade, rates of premature death in Scotland remain around a third higher than in England and Wales. Premature death in West Central Scotland is almost twice as common as in England and Wales. (Monitoring poverty and social exclusion in Scotland 2006 Joseph Rowntree Foundation)

In 2000 A "fat tsar" was appointed to wean Scotland's obese population off their fat-soaked, deep-fried, vegetable-shunning Caledonian cuisine. The job was created after a three-year study of the nation's serious health problems, said to be among the worst in Europe.

Due to the low pressure systems from the Atlantic Ocean and the hilly nature of the terrain, Scotland is generally cloudier than England.

The temperatures in Scotland are generally a few degrees cooler than in England because of the hilly terrace and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Scottish National Football team currently stand 33rd in the official FIFA rankings. The USA are 24th.

Wow, what an eye-opener! I live in Canada and I always thought Scotland must be a lovely place to live, but after reading that I think if the figures are correct, there are a lot of fat, unhealthy people there. Excellent blog, by the way.

Hi SWEATY
Just reading your Blogs, I am of the feeling that you are Anti Scottish, could I be correct in this? if so what would be the reason for this Racism or is it that you are just naturally obnoxious.
I have just been reading your post on Elizabeth Malcolm is it your intention to insinuate that this is an example of all Scottish people?
Now I am not Scottish, I have worked all my life, a full military career serving in war zones, war's which where caused solely by people of a racist and anti semetic nature, a nature not too disimilar to yours it would seem.
These days however I am a social worker in the north east and can say that your claims that the Scottish are lazy, uneducated, work shy and also prevalently obese are absolute garbage, what is more truer is that the Scottish have a higher standard of education and of further education than indeed our so fantastic England, Glasgow is amongst the most culturally diverse Cities in the world where the rates of race crimes are extremely low, this is unsurpased in any of our english cities.
Some of the worlds top chefs are scottish again more so that any our own.
As for the failings in the NHS isnt it that the Scottish NHS, have less waiting times have a lower mortality rate, are more open to funding when it comes to life saving prescription drugs where our English nhs cant and wont provide needed cancer saving drugs.....
Your intention of this site is plainly obvious hence the title Scotland the Grave!!!
And i would suggest that maybe you should spend some time lookin at the state of this country before slandering others.
Incidentally I note that under your own details there is nothing why is this why hide your identity when you feel so strongly, also wondering with your oh so racist views if your name shows in the recent leek of BNP data perhaps thats why you hide your id?
Anyway enough of my ramblings.
Nice speaking to you and sharing my views please dont delete this reply.
Please show your details.
Who is rotty?

Malcolm.
Ps... just ran a check, apparently Rotty is your father ! and your name does appear on the BNP list ! which has been posted elsewhere on the net...
Please do not delete this post, if your racist views are so strong have the strength to stand behind them .

Hi there Sweaty (or should I say Son!?)

Am addressing you out of courtesy as the blog owner, but would very much appreciate it if you could pass on this message to the poster who comments under the name Anon and yet signs himself out as Malcolm. How strange. I feel it is necessary to point out to Anon/Malcolm that the facts and figures on your blog are not your own opinion but information from other reliable sources and agencies. There is nothing whatsoever in my view to suggest racism on your part - after all, I was under the impression that Great Britain was made up of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales (and rumor has it that the Scots would defend any team playing any kind of sport against England!) and that, to my knowledge, the BNP is a legitimate political party! However, my priority is to ask you if you could contact the poster and ask if he could post a link on your blog for the program which not only "runs a check" on other posters but which can also determine that particular contributor's relatives! I could then afford Anon (or is it Malcolm) the same courtesy. Hopefully he hasn't left this particular tool on the Tardis! In the meantime, may I respectfully suggest he either takes a chill pill or more water with his scotch!

Dear Sweaty,
I was amazed to read the particular comment by Malcolm, although he does raise some valid points. I am not too sure though what the rest of his post is about as it seems he is rather unhealthily interested in the personal life of the blogger! By the way if Rotty gets a copy of the amazing programme I trust I will get one also.
